2. What is an archipelago? A chain of islands, near the coast of Asia.
3.Japan consists of what? Japan consists of four large islands and thousands of smaller ones.
4.What is the highest peak in Japan? Mount Fuji, or Fujiyama, is the highest peak.
5.Why does Japan only use 20% of its land for farming? It is so mountainous.
6.Where do the Japanese islands sit? They sit at the boundary between two plates, or sections, of Earth's outer shell.
7.What happened millions of years ago in Japan? Volcanoes erupted.
8. What happens when the plates beneath Japan are constantly pushing against one another? Earthquakes shake Japan. Most of them are small and harmless, but the big ones can be deadly.
9.What is Japan part of? Japan is part of the Ring of Fire, a region of volcanoes and earthquakes that circle the Pacific Ocean.
10. What is the mainland? It is the major land area of a continent.
11. Where did the first settlers in Japan come from? The first settlers in Japan came from the mainland of Asia.
12.The first wave of settlers in Japan came during what time? They most likely came during the Ice Age, which ended about 11.000 years ago.
