| Blockade Runners | A person that tries to break through a blockade |
| Privateers | Merchant ship armed with guns |
| Pook Turtles | Nickname given to the ironclads |
| Antiseptic | a disinfectant that kills germs |
| Minie Ball | a rife bullet |
| Artillery | Cannons and other huge guns |
| Copperheads | People in the northern states who sympathized with the South |
| Conscription | Enrolling people into the military |
| Bounties | a reward given by government |
| Skirmish | a minor battle |
| Siege | a very long battle |
| Total War | destroying the enemy's ability to fight |
| Muster | to gather |
| Anesthetic | pain killer |
| Cavalry | Troops on horseback |

| Emancipate | to free from slavery |
| profiteer | makes money off of goods in time of need |
| tax-in-kind | Southern tax that made farmers bring one tenth of crops to government |
