What was the first plan of gov. for the U.S.? What is the Main reason it failed? The Articles of Confederation failed because it gave too much power to the State Govs and not enough to the Federal Gov.
What is a constitution? Who designed the Constitution? A Constitution is a plan of government, usually written as a formal document. The people who designed it were known as the Framers of the Constitution, or the Founding Fathers.
Who is considered the Father of the Constitution? Why? James Madison, because he wrote most of it, and also over 1/3 of the Federalist Papers, which promoted the Constitution.
What kind of states did the Virginia plan favor? Why? Large states, because it said that the larger your population, the more votes you would have in Congress.
What does the Great Compromise say? The Great Compromise says that there will be 2 Houses of Congress. The House of Reps. will have representatives based of population of the state. The Senate will have 100 senators, 2 from each state.
How did the North and the South compromise around slavery for the purpose of counting population for seats in the House of Reps.? They decided that slaves would count as 3/5 of a normal person when counting population.
How was this compromise demeaning to the slaves? In the Declaration of Independence, there is a line that says, "All men are created equal," and being counted as 3/5 of a person isn't equal.
What does it mean to ratify a document? It means to approve that document by voting.
On what date was the Constitution signed, and in what year was it ratified by the 9th state? The Constitution was signed on 9/17/1787, and the 9th state to ratify it did so in 1788.
What is the purpose of the Preamble to the Constitution? The purpose of the Preamble is to say that why the US needed a new government, and it lists all the things we could achieve with one. "A more perfect union...domestic tranquility...blessings of liberty, etc.
What is the purpose of the Judicial Branch? The purpose of the Judicial Branch is to interpret the law.
What is the purpose of the Legislative branch? The purpose of the Legislative Branch is to make new laws.
What is the purpose of the Executive branch? The purpose of the Executive Branch is to carry out the law.
