| Pearl Harbor | United States military base on Hawaii that was bombed by Japan, bringing the United States into WWII. December 7, 1941. |
| Internment | the imprisonment or confinement of people, commonly in large groups, without trial. The United States did it to Japanese-Americans in WWII |
| Lend-Lease Act | US policy (while neutral) to lend war materials to nations if it was “vital to US security” |
| Battle of Midway | Important naval victory against Japan during WWII. |
| D-Day | Allied invasion of German-occupied France; beginning of pushing Germany back. June 6, 1944 |
| Fall of Berlin | April 1945, surrounded by Allies to southwest & Soviet Red Army to the east, Hitler committed suicide & Germany surrendered. |
| Mobilization | America making every effort to be successful in WWII – industry converts, women work, rationing, etc. |
| Manhattan Project | Code name for program to develop the atomic bomb |
| Los Alamos | Location of secret labs where atomic bomb was created. |
| Atomic Bomb | Nuclear weapon developed by US during WWII – used to end war |
| Hiroshima | Japanese City that was the first target of an atomic attack by the US |
| European Theater | Fighting against Germany and Italy |
| Pacific Theater | Fighting against Japan |
| Wartime Conservation | Using only the necessities and sending the rest to the war – helped economy recover from depression |
| Rationing | Government only allowed families to use small amounts of certain groceries & gas |
| Joseph Stalin | Communist dictator of the USSR during WWII |
| Adolph Hitler | Nazi Dictator of Germany during WWII |
| Winston Chirchill | Prime Minister of Britain during much of WWII |
| Harry S. Truman | Becomes US President after death of FDR in 1945 |
