| Polis | the Greek word for “city-state” |
| Classical | an age that is marked by great achievements |
| Acropolis | a high hill that had the fortress of the polis |
| Aristocrats | rich landowners |
| Citizen | people who had the right to participate in government (not everyone was able to!) |
| Mythology | a collection of stories about gods and heroes that try to explain how the world works |
| Fables | short stories that teach the reader lessons about life or give advice on how to live |

| Peninsula | Area of land surrounded on 3 sides by water |
| Pericles | an elected leader of Athens, was brilliant and encouraged people to participate in the government |
| Homer | a great Greek poet that created some of the earliest Greek writings such as the Iliad and Odyssey |
| Socrates | a teacher and great thinker. He believed that people should never stop looking for knowledge. |
| Plato | A philosopher taught by the famous Socrates |
| Democracy | a type of government in which people rule. Demos - People; cracy - rule Democracy = People rule (Athens Democracy was born) |
| Oligarchy | a type of government in which only a few people have power (Sparta ruled by 2 kings) |
| Tyrant | a leader who held power through the use of force |
| Persian War | Persia wanted to expand their Territory and fought Greece to get their land. Athens and Sparta fought on the same side in this war. |
| Peloponnesian War | After the Persian War Athens Tried to take over and Sparta did not like it Sparta revolted and Athens got mad and wanted to teach Sparta a lesson. They went to war. Athen with their Naval Fleet on water and Sparta with their Warriors on the ground. |
| Plague | A deadly disease that spreads rapidly and leaves behind death |
