| Habeas Corpus | a writ of habeas corpus is a legal order. It protects people from being held in prison or jail without formal charges of a crime. |
| Elastic Clause | Allows future generations to expand the meaning of the constitution. |
| Impeachment | The process of accusing a public officer of wrong doing. |
| Quorum | The minimum number of members that must be present for official business to take place. |
| Indictment | a written statement used by a grand jury charging a person with a crime. |
| Enumeration | An official count, such as a census. |
| Federalist | Supporters of the Constitution. |
| Anti-Federalist | A person who opposed the ratification of the U.S Constitution. |
| States Rights | Theory said that states had the right to judge when the federal government had passed an unconstitutional law. |
| Nullification | The idea that a state could invalidate or "nullify" the federal law within the state. |
| Impressment | The act of seizing by force. |
| Annexation | To attach, append, or add, esp. to something larger or more important. |
| Abolitionist | Someone against slavery. |
| Emancipation | To free (a slave) from bondage. |
| Secede | To withdraw. |
| Republic | A government in which people elect representatives to govern for them. |
| Judicial Review | The principle that the Supreme Court has the final say in interpreting the constitution. |
| Ratification | Official approval. |
