QuestionAnswer
Songhai was a pre-colonial African state of west Africa. From the early 15th to the late 16th century, Songhai was one of the largest African empires in history.
matrilineal Relating to, based on, or tracing ancestral descent through the maternal line.
tran-Saharan trade is trade across the Sahara between Mediterranean countries and sub-Saharan Africa.
Geographic determinism a theory that the human habits and characteristics of a particular culture are shaped by geographic conditions.
Savannah A type of sub-desert that has some vegetation and with mostly high grass.
Sahara A vast desert of northern Africa extending east from the Atlantic coast to the Nile Valley and south from the Atlas Mountains to the region of the Sudan.
Ghana an empire in Western Africa which controlled territories in the area of the Sénégal river and east towards the Niger rivers. It was one of the most advanced states in sub-Saharan Africa in the 18-19th centuries.
gold-salt trade the Empire of Ghana was located posessed a large amount of gold the region lacked salt. The Desert regions contained huge salt resources and desert ppl were in search of valuables, the goldsalt trade between the Ghana Empire and the Arab desert merchants.
Camels The Africans used camels to travel long distances because they were made for going a long period of time without drinking.
Timbuktu It is famous for its universities.
Sankore It is the most famous university in Timbuktu. It is made up of small schools run by iman/socholar. The max degree was 10 years.
Impact of Islam As Islam spread across the Arabian Peninsula and later across North Africa and the Middle East, it had an aggregating effect.
