TermDefinition
Polis the Greek word for “city-state”
Classical an age that is marked by great achievements
Acropolis a high hill that had the fortress of the polis
Aristocrats rich landowners
Citizen people who had the right to participate in government (not everyone was able to!)
Mythology a collection of stories about gods and heroes that try to explain how the world works
Fables short stories that teach the reader lessons about life or give advice on how to live
Influence change or have an effect on
Pericles an elected leader of Athens, was brilliant and encouraged people to participate in the government
Homer a great Greek poet that created some of the earliest Greek writings such as the Iliad and Odyssey
Socrates a teacher and great thinker. He believed that people should never stop looking for knowledge.
Democracy a type of government in which people rule themselves
Oligarchy a type of government in which only a few people have power
Tyrant a leader who held power through the use of force
