Sub-Saharan Africa: Physical Geography

| Imperialism | The practice of extending a nation's influence by controlling other territories |
| Deforestation | The practice of cutting down forests for crops or Urban use |
| City-state | An independent state made up of a city and the territories depending on it |
| Escarpment | A steep slope |
| Savanna | grassland, as in the south of sub-Saharan Africa |
| Rift Valley | A deep valley formed when Earth's crust separated, as in East Africa |
| Poaching | Illegal hunting or fishing |
| Highlands | Areas of high mountainous land |
| Desertification | A gradual transition from fertile to less productive land |
| Transition zone | An area between two geographic regions that has characteristics of both |
| Lingua Franca | The common language among several groups of people |
