Sub-Saharan Africa: Physical Geography

Landlocked Surrounded by land on all sides, with no direct access to a Sea Coast
Imperialism The practice of extending a nation's influence by controlling other territories
Deforestation The practice of cutting down forests for crops or Urban use
City-state An independent state made up of a city and the territories depending on it
Escarpment A steep slope
Savanna grassland, as in the south of sub-Saharan Africa
Rift Valley A deep valley formed when Earth's crust separated, as in East Africa
Poaching Illegal hunting or fishing
Highlands Areas of high mountainous land
Desertification A gradual transition from fertile to less productive land
Transition zone An area between two geographic regions that has characteristics of both
Lingua Franca The common language among several groups of people
