| unitary | all the power belongs to the central government |
| confederation | loose alliance of countries or political unit: |
| federal | power is divided between the central government and the states |
| autocracy | one leader holds complete power |
| oligarchy | a small group of people with wealth or power holds all control |
| democratic | the people hold supreme power |
| parliamentary democracy | the legislature is elected by the people, but the Prime Minister is elected by the Parliament |
| presidential democracy | the legislature and the president are directly elected by the people |
| federal republic | power is divided between the national and local governments and decisions are made by elected officials who represent the people |
| dictatorship | one who has absolute authority |
| constitutional monarchy | a country has its own constitution but its head of state is a monarch |
| mixed economy | economy that falls between a command economy and a market economy |
| market economy | economic decisions are based on what people buy and sell |
| command economy | government controls what and how things are produced |
| specialization | when countries produce only what they are good at |
| NAFTA | an agreement made between Mexico, Canada, and the United States to remove most tariffs on trade between these nations |
