Sub-Saharan Africa History and culture

TermDefinition
Imperialism The practice of extending a nation's influence by controlling other territories
Domestic policy A government's plan for running affairs within its own borders.
Transportation corridor A land or water route to move people and goods from place to place easily.
Literacy rate The percentage of people who can read and write.
Lingua franca The common language among several groups of people.
trans-Atlantic slave trade The business of trading slaves taken from Africa across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas starting in the 1500's.
Modernization Policies and actions designed to bring a country up to date in technology and other areas.
City-state An independent state made up of a city and the territories depending on it.
Griot A traditional African storyteller.
