List three common subordinators. | Although, if, while, which. |
Example of an independent clause: | Sue ate a piece of candy. |
Example of a dependent clause: | When Sue ate a piece of candy, |
What is a phrase? | A phrase is a group of words that NEVER have a noun/verb pair together. |
Give three examples of a prepositional phrase: | Around the corner, in the desk, At Goody's. |
Give three examples of a present participle phrase: | Tired of his arguing, delighted by the surprise, eating an ice cream cone. |
Define simple sentence. | A simple sentence can have many subjects/ predicates, but only completes one thought. It has just one independent clause! |
Example of a simple sentence with a phrase: | John went to the park. |
Example of a simple sentence with compound predicates: | Hanah, Jordan, and Annabelle went for a very long walk in the crowded and loud park. |
Define compound sentence. | A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses and is joined by a FANBOYS. Unless it is a very short compound sentence. |
Example of a compound sentence: | I like a big slice of apple pie, and I also enjoy a scoop of ice cream. OR I like pie and I also enjoy ice cream. |
List FANBOYS: | For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. |
Define complex sentence. | A dependent clause has both a subject and predicate but does not express a complete though and cannot stand alone as a sentence. |
What is another name of a dependent clause? | Subordinate clause. |
Example of complex sentence-dependent clause first: | Dependent clause + independent clause = comma |
Example of complex sentence-independent clause first: | Independent clause + dependent clause = no comma |
What is a fragment sentence? | A fragment sentence is a part of a sentence that is written as if it were a completes sentence. |
Example of a fragment sentence missing predicate: | The students on Rolling Thunder. |
Example of a fragment sentence missing subject: | Jumping off tables in the cafeteria. |
What is a run-on sentence? | A run-on sentence is two or more sentences written as though it were a single sentence. |
Example of a run on: | I love to ski, the runs at Bogus, are amazing! |
List three ways to fix a run-on sentence: | Add a period. Add a semi-colon, or create a compound sentence. |
