| Nazism | ideology of and belief in the policies of Adolf Hitler that focused on nationalism, racism, and rearmament. |
| Communism | a political system in which the government owns all property and controls all aspects of life in a country |
| Dictator | ruler who has total control |
| Genocide | deliberate destruction of a group of people |
| Axis Powers | an alliance between Germany, Italy, and Japan |
| Appeasement | A new strategy used against Hitler in which he Western democracies would give into the demands of an aggressor in order to keep the peace |
| Allies | included USA, Britain, France, and USSR |
| Holocaust | the attempt by the Nazi government in World War II to eliminate Europe’s Jews. |
| Atomic warfare | used by the US to bring an end to the war with Japan |
| D-Day | When the Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France and the invasion dealt a serious blow to the Axis and paved the way for the Allied forces to advance on Germany. |
| Pearl Harbor | when Japan attacked the United States in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii |
| Totalitarian | controlling the people of a country in a very strict way with complete power that cannot be opposed. |
| Fascism | a political system headed by a dictator in which the government controls business and labor and opposition is not permitted. |
| Blitzkrieg | "lightning" war- war conducted with great speed and force; specifically : a violent surprise |
