Vocab for the Syrian Crisis

TermDefinition
Civil War A war between citizens of the same country
Arab Spring Revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests occurring in the Middle East and in North Africa since 2010.
Revolution A forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system.
Bashar al-Assad Current President of Syria
Proxy War A war instigated by a major power that does not itself become involved.
ISIS Islamic State in Iraq and Syria; an extremist militant group that rules by Wahhabi/Salafi law.
Activists A person who campaigns for some kind of social change through marching, protests, etc.
Opposition Resistance or dissent, expressed in action or argument.
War Crimes An action carried out during the conduct of a war that violates accepted international rules of war.
Humanitarian Concerned with or seeking to promote human welfare.
Genocide The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.
Ceasefires A temporary suspension of fighting, typically one during which peace talks take place; a truce.
