| Revolution | A forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system. |
| Bashar al-Assad | Current President of Syria |
| Proxy War | A war instigated by a major power that does not itself become involved. |
| ISIS | Islamic State in Iraq and Syria; an extremist militant group that rules by Wahhabi/Salafi law. |
| Activists | A person who campaigns for some kind of social change through marching, protests, etc. |
| Opposition | Resistance or dissent, expressed in action or argument. |
| War Crimes | An action carried out during the conduct of a war that violates accepted international rules of war. |
| Humanitarian | Concerned with or seeking to promote human welfare. |
| Genocide | The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. |
| Ceasefires | A temporary suspension of fighting, typically one during which peace talks take place; a truce. |
