Learn about the cultures and holidays that are celebrated in December.

Boxing Day This holiday commemorates the day when the gentry would box up unwanted gifts and re-gift them to their servants. This is still widely celebrated in the Commonwealth Nations.
Omisoka In preparation for a new year and a clean slate people purify their homes by cleaning from top to bottom. Those who celebrate this holiday do so with giant feasts and talent shows. The celebration culminates with temples ringing a large cast iron bell.
Hanukkah Also known as the 'Festival of Lights,' this sacred holiday commemorates a time when Maccabees believed the oil they had would only be sufficient to light their lamp for one day, but the lamp remained lit for 8 days.
Jamhuri Day Kenyans express their gratitude for their freedom through dance, feasting, parades, and other public events. All of the activities performed on this holiday are representations of the way Kenyans view life and societal values.
Christmas Day A Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of a Savior. Celebrants of this holiday decorate their homes with colored lights and an evergreen tree, and exchange gifts.
Kwanzaa This holiday is a secular festival observed by many African Americans from December 26 to January 1 as a celebration of their cultural heritage and traditional values.
Yule The holiday marks the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and celebrates the rebirth of the sun and beginning of winter. It is one of the oldest winter celebrations known.
St. Lucia Day One of the biggest celebrations in Sweden is this holiday, which happens on December 13th. The celebration comes from stories, told by Monks who first brought Christianity to Sweden, about a young Christian girl who was martyred in 304.
Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe The day when a man was visited by an apparition who advised him to build a church on a former Aztec Temple site. The day is celebrated nationally with church services, bringing flowers to statues of Mary, decorating homes, and music.
Milad un-Nabi Muslims in India observe a holiday, which commemorates the Prophet Muhammad's (or Mohammad's) birthday. The food prepared during this celebration feature the Prophet's favorite ingredients like dates and honey.
Saint Nicholas Day Kids celebrate this holiday by putting shoes under their beds or outside and wake up to find them filled with little treats in the morning. The holiday commemorates the life of a saint who many believe inspires the Santa Claus traditions.
