Europe: Roman Empire/Industrial Revolution

TermDefinition
Democracy A form of government by the people, in which citizens often elect representatives to govern them.
Aristocrats Members of the upper class
Aqueduct A transporting system for carrying water long distances, sometimes raised on a bridge.
Barbarians Soldiers or warriors considered to be culturally less developed than those being fought; the term originally comes from the German tribes who invaded the Roman Empire.
City-state An independent state made up of a city and the territories depending on it.
Feudal system A social structure during the Middle Ages consisting of a king, lords, vassals and serfs.
Patrician A wealthy landowner in ancient Rome.
Philosopher A person who examines questions about the universe and searches for the truth.
Plebeian A farmer or lower class person in ancient rome.
Republic A form of government in which officials are elected by the people to govern.
Serf From the 1500s to the 1800s, a poor Russian or European peasant farmer who rented land from a landlord and had few rights.
Veto To reject a decision made by another government body.
