Key ItemDefinition
Barbary Pirates Pirates from the country of Tripoli. They would sail around the Mediterranean Sea and attack merchant vessels for money and goods. The only way to avoid being attacked was if your country paid a high tribute to Tripoli.
Tribute Money paid for protection.
Stephen Decatur American naval officer. Slipped into the Tripoli Harbor and burned an American ship so it couldn't be used by Tripoli.
Neutral Rights The right to sail the seas and not take sides in a war.
Impressment Forcing people into service. What the British navy was doing to American sailors.
Embargo A law that prohibits trade with other countries
Embargo Act Act passed by Congress intended to keep American ships off the seas and hurt England economically.
Nonintercourse Act Prohibited trade with Britain and France only.
Tecumseh Native American leader who encouraged other tribes to join him in a Confederacy. That way they would be able to stand up to the American Government. Will be helping England in the War of 1812.
The Prophet Tecumsehs brother. Told Native Americans to return to the customs of their ancestors. Give up all practices learned from the white people, including drinking alcohol. Created his own town that was attacked by William Henry Harrison.
William Henry Harrison and the Battle of Tippecanoe Govenor of the Indiana Territory. Was afraid of Tecumseh and his bother gaining power. He and his militia attacked the Prophet's town in the Battle of Tippecanoe. The prophets forces fled after two hours of fighting.
Nationalism Loyalty to a nation and promotion of its interests above all others.
War Hawks Republicans during Madison's presidency who pressed for war with Britain.
Lake Erie An important Great Lake to have control of during the War of 1812. Form there the military is able to control who comes into the rest of the great lakes. Plus it cuts English ships off from two large cities that supplied food and goods to the troops.
Frigates A warship.
Privateers A privately owned warship. Usually a trading ship that had been converted to a warship.
Andrew Jackson American army general in the War of 1812. Attacked the Creek Native Americans in Mississippi at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Also was the leading general in the final battle of the war, the Battle of New Orleans. Gained national fame during this war.
Washington, DC During the war of 1812 the English marched into the capital and burned the White House and the Capitol buildings. They then left to go to Batlimore.
Francis Scott Key Wrote the "Star Spangled Banner" as the English attacked Fort McHenry in the Baltimore Harbor.
Treaty of Ghent Ended the war of 1812.
