Literacy Rate The percentage of adults who can read and write.
Hajj The pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims must make once in their lifetime.
Koran (Quran) The sacred book of the Islamic faith.
Nomad A member of a people or tribe that has no permanent residence but moves about from place to place.
Monarchy A government headed by a King or a Queen.
Theocracy A government controlled by religious leaders.
Parliamentary Government A democratic form of government where the legislature (Parliament) has the power.
Private Enterprise People running their own businesses.
Holocaust A time when over 6 million Jews were killed in concentration camps set up by Germany.
Antisemitism Hatred of Jews simply because they practice the Jewish faith.
Ghetto An area where Jews were confined by the Nazis during WWII; surrounded by barbed wire, brick walls and armed soldiers.
Diaspora The movement, migration or scattering of people away from an established or ancestral homeland.
Al Qaeda a global broad-based militant Islamist organization founded by Osama bin Laden; responsible for the attacks on the United States September 11, 2001
Saddam Hussein leader of Iraq from 1979 until his execution in 2006; wanted control of Kuwait’s oil fields and access to the Persian Gulf
Osama bin Laden the leader of the terrorist group Al Qaeda that was sheltered in Afghanistan during the War on Terror
Terrorism the use of violence against a group of people or government in hopes of achieving a political goal.
