Crazy Horse Sioux military leader who was part of the Fetterman Massacre and Little Bighorn.
Sitting Bull Lakota Sioux leader who fought at Little Bighorn and was thought to have started the Ghost Dance.
Black Hills Part of the Dakota Territory. Sacred land to the Lakota Sioux. Wanted by American settlers for gold that was found in them.
Colonel George Custer Sent by the American government to move the Native Americans from the Black Hills area to a reservation so the Americans could search for gold.
Battle of Little Bighorn Custers force was greatly overwhelmed by the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Victory for the Native Americans was short-lived.
Dawes Act Broke up reservations to give land to individual Native American families and sent children to boarding schools far away from their families.
Ghost Dance A dance performed by Native Americans with the belief that it would bring back their ancestors who were killed in the struggle against white men and send the white men back where they came from.
Wounded Knee Site where the massacre of 200 Sioux who had gathered to mourn the death of Sitting Bull. It was old men, women and children. Marked the end of armed conflict between whites and Native Americans.
Blamed for farmers troubles 1. The railroad Companies 2. The eastern manufacturers 3. The bank
National Grange A farmers organization that offered help to farmers through: education, fellowship and support
cooperatives stores where farmers bought products from one another.
Farmers Alliance Like the National Grange but helped by having the government store goods and give loans until the farmers where able to sell their crops.
Populist Party Appeal to the common people. Wanted: 1. government own the railroad and telegraph lines. 2. Currency be based off free silver system. 3. limit president and vice president to a single term 2. elect senators directly 3. secret ballots
free silver unlimited production of silver coins to stimulate the economy
