Astrolabe | An instrument used by sailors to determine their location by observing the position of the stars and planets |
Bartolomeu Dias | Portuguese explorer who in 1488 led the first expedition to sail around the southern tip of Africa from the Atlantic and sight the Indian Ocean. |
Caravel | A small, highly maneuverable three-masted ship used by the Portuguese and Spanish in the exploration of the Atlantic. |
Christopher Columbus | An Italian navigator who was funded by the Spanish Government to find a passage to the Far East. He is given credit for discovering the "New World," even though at his death he believed he had made it to India. He made four voyages to the "New World." |
Colonization | One country taking over another area to be used for their benefit. |
Conquistators | Spanish settlers, explorers, and fortune hunters who took part in the conquest of the Americans in the 16th century |
Empire | A group of states or territories controlled by one ruler |
European Exploration | voyages to new territories by European navigators in the 15th century. |
John Cabot | English explorer who claimed Newfoundland for England while looking for Northwest Passage |
Nationalism | A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country |
Natural Resources | Materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain |
Prince Henry the Navigator | (1394-1460) Prince of Portugal who established an observatory and school of navigation at Sagres and directed voyages that spurred the growth of Portugal's colonial empire. |
Vasco Da Gama | Portuguese explorer. In 1497-1498 he led the first naval expedition from Europe to sail to India, opening an important commercial sea route. |
