Osman, a warrior chieftain, founds the Ottoman Empire. 1288
Sultan Mehmed II conquers Constantinople and extends Ottoman control. The powerful empire lasts 600 years 1453
After World War I, Ottomans and foreign troops occupy the region. 1914
Constantinople is officially renamed Istanbul. 1930
Two earthquakes in northern Turkey kill more than 17,000 people. 1999
A new currency, called Iira, is introduced. It has six fewer zeroes. 2005
The Turkish Teachers from Sakarya arrive to Florence 2nd October 2016
