maps and globes vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Legend/map key | A table that shows what the symbols on the map means |
| longitude | The distance measured east or west of the prime meridian measured in meridians lines run north and south |
| hemisphere | Half of the earth |
| global grid | when both longitude and latitude are shown on the map and intersect |
| degree | longitude and latitude are written in degrees |
| map | A two dimensional picture that shows you the info on an area |
| aerial photograph | A picture taken from above (a birds eye view) |
| meridian | The imaginary lines that measure longitude |
| latitude | The distance north or south of the equator measured in parallels |
| parallel | The imaginary lines that measure latitude |
| cardinal directions | The main directions North, east, south, West |
| intermediate directions | The directions in between cardinal directions North East, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest |
| prime meridian | The line at 0° longitude |
| absolute location | A specific place with the coordinates of longitude and latitude |
| compass rose | A small symbol on a map that shows the direction of north |
| scale | shows the exact degrees of longitude and latitude written on a map |
| map symbol | The pictures on a map that stand for a certain item or place |
| locator | A small overlook of the earth that shows you where the map you are looking at is in the world |
| globe | A 3 dimensional model of the earth |
| relative location | the location of a place in relation to another place |
