| Term | Definition |

| LEGEND | A key on a map that explains the symbols on a map |
| ALTITUDE | The height of land above the sea level |
| ELEVATION | Another word for altitude.The height of land above sea level |
| PLATEAU | Flat or gently rolling land,high above sea level |
| SCALE | A ratio that compares map distance to an actual distance |
| GRIDS | A series of lines on a map or globe that cross eachother at right angles. They are labeled with letters and numbers |
| NORTH POLE | The most northern point on the earth |
| SOUTH POLE | The most southern point on the earth |
| COMPASS ROSE | An arrow on a map that shows directions |
| CARDINAL DIRECTIONS | The four main directions on a compass rose such as north,south,east, and west |
| INTERMIDIATE DIRECTIONS | The "in-between" directions on a compass rose such as northeast and southwest |
| ISTHMUS | A narrow strip of land that connects two larger pieces of land |
| EQUINOX | Equal hours of daylight and darkness.This happens two days a year,on September 22nd or 23rd and march 22nd and 23rd.During the equinox the earth is neither towards the sun or away from the sun |
| CLIMATE | the usual weather in an area |
| REVOLUTION | One complete journey of the earth around the sun. It takes a whole year for the earth to complete this journey |
| REVOLVE | To turn.The earth turns around the sun |
| AXIS | An imaginary line running through the earth from north to south |
| MERIDIANS OF LONGITUDE | Lines on a map or globe that run from north to south and are labeled with letters and numbers |
| PARALLELS OF LATITUDE | Lines on a map or globe that run from west to east and are labeled with letters and numbers |
| ROTATION | one complete turn of the earth on its axis every 24 hours |
