transcontinental railroad A railroad that spanned the entire continent.
standard time A time that everyone uses so railroads have the same schedules.
robber baron A person who becomes wealthy by using dishonest methods.
corporation A business owned by investors who buy part of the company.
Andrew Carnegie A man who dominated the steel industry.
John D. Rockefeller A man who dominated the oil industry.
monopoly When a business is the only place selling a certain product.
trust A legal body created to hold stock in many companies, often in the same industry.
philanthropists Someone who gives large sums of money to charity.
Gilded Age The wealth of a few people his society's problems.
