Reading Review for Oklahoma CRT test

QuestionAnswer
What is a simile? a comparison using like or as
what is a metaphor? A comparison where one thing is said to be another.
What is alliteration? A repetition of beginning sounds like "She sells sea shells".
What is a hyperbole? An exaggeration such as "I'm starving" when you are hungry.
What are the four reasons authors write? entertain, persuade, describe, inform
What is a haiku? A five line poem usually about nature
What is a sonnet? a form of poetry written in fourteen lines and ending in a couplet. Sonnets also have a specific rhythm the poet must follow.
What is a genre A type of writing such as fiction, historical fiction, biography, drama, fables, tall tales.
What is the plot? what happens in the story, the main actions that carry the story along and keep you interested. It is also the order of events.
What is personification? A figure of speech in which things are endowed with human qualities or are represented as possessing human form.
What is a dictionary? a reference book containing an alphabetical list of words with their meanings and pronunciations.
What is a thesaurus? a book containing the synonyms of words. When you look up a word in the thesaurus, you will find a list of words that mean the same thing.
What is an encyclopedia? series of reference books containing brief articles on a wide range of subjects and people. A good place to get a quick overview of a subject before pursuing more in-depth research.
What is an inference and conclusion? They are special kinds of guesses. To make them, you have to come up with your own ideas, answers, and thoughts about what you have read. Good readers can make them based on what a passage says.
What is a synonym? word that has the same or almost the same meaning as another word.
What is an antonym? word that means the opposite of another word.
