Social Studies Geography/Maps

TermDefinition
Relative location A location compared to another location using the compass rose.
Map Tools that show where things are. They are also 2 dimensional.
Absolute location A precise point where a place is located on earth.
Compass Rose The symbol that indicates the cardinal directions. Ex. North, South, etc.
Distortion Changes in shape, size, and position
Globe Globes show size, shape, and distances better than maps because they are sphere's.
Map Projections They are particular way of showing Earth on a flat surface.
Map legend A box that holds the symbols used on a map
Cardinal directions North, South, East, West
Intermediate directions Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest
Map Key Also known as a map legend
Map Grid A system of imaginary lines that divides up the space on the map
Global Grid The system of longitude and latitude
