Louisiana Territory All the land from the Mississippi River West to the Rocky Mountains. Owned originally by Spain, then sold to France, then to the United States for $15 million.
Napoleon Bonaparte Wanted to create an empire in North America. When he lost Santo Domingo to a revolt, he quickly sold the land to the United States.
Meriwether Lewis Private secretary to Thomas Jefferson. Chosen to lead an expedition to explore the new territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Had experience in the army and working with Native Americans.
William Clark Worked with Lewis on the Expedition to explore the new territory. Chosen because of military experience and experience in dealing with Native Americans.
Sacagewea The Native American woman who helped lead the expedition safely to the Pacific and back.
Zebulon Pike Also explored the new territory and discovered Pike's Peak. He called it the "Grand Peak."
The Duel Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel after he left Hamilton caused him to lose the election as governor of New York. Shot Hamilton and he died a few days later.
