The Home Front

QuestionAnswer
Contrary to previous wars, what state was the US in afer WWII? A good one, we became one of the mos tprosperous nations in the world
What three groups of people saw a lot of improvement in their lives? Workers, as the unemployment rate dropped and wages went up. Farmers, as new technology developed and the weather was good. Women got a chance to show they were just as good as men
What was the main flow of the population shift? People left the south since agriculture wasnt too profitable during the war, to the industrial north
What were some social adjustments in WWII? Children became babysat more often, teens caused problems, lots of sweethearts got married before soldier husbands went to war and families had to readjust once soldier family members came home
What did the GI Bill of Rights do? It gave education and training to returning soldiers so that they could get on with their lives
Who was James Farmer? A Civil Rights activist who founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in response to the mass migration of blacks to the midwest
The migration of blacks into the midwest caused mainly what? Racial tensions, that eventually broke out into a fight in detroit, killing almost 40 people
What were zoot-suiters? Mexican youth who dressed unconventionally, they were a subject of a lot of hatred and racial discrimination
Define internment Confinement. Hawaii was forced to intern 1444 Japanese Americans at the beggining of WWII
What happened to Japanese Americans on the West Coast? Most were rounded up and sent to prison camps because they "threatened national security
What is JACL? The Japanese American Citizens League fought the government to get reparations for everything they had lost during internment
