| settlement house | groups that provided services to immigrants and others living in cities, taught immigrants English, business skills, gave free meals, and medical care |
| innovation | a new idea, method, or device |
| patent | an official document that gives an inventor the only right to make, sell, or use his or her invention |
| laboratory | a room or building where experiments take place |
