Underground Railroad | a series of escape routes for slaves |
slave state | a state in which slavery is allowed |
free state | a state in which slavery in NOT allowed |
Union | the northern states during the Civil War |
popular sovereignty | authority carried out by the people |
fugitive | a person who runs away from the law |
secession | the act of withdrawing membership from a union |
Confederacy | the 11 Southern states that seceded from the U.S. |
Civil War | the war between the North and the South |
border states | slave states that remained part of the Union |
