| immigration | coming to a country in which one was not born |
| sectionalism | loyalty to local and regional interests and customs |
| urban | relating to cities |
| abolitionist | a person who wants to stop slavery |
| discrimination | the unfair treatment of particular groups |
| Underground Railroad | a series of escape routes for slaves |
| slave state | a state in which slavery is allowed |
| free state | a state in which slavery in NOT allowed |
| Union | the northern states during the Civil War |
| popular sovereignty | authority carried out by the people |
| fugitive | a person who runs away from the law |
| secession | the act of withdrawing membership from a union |
| Confederacy | the 11 Southern states that seceded from the U.S. |
| Civil War | the war between the North and the South |
| border states | slave states that remained part of the Union |
