What countries did Japan claim? Indonesia, China, the East Indies, Guam, Wake, and the Solomon Islands
Who was douglas MacArthur? The General who led the Allies against the Japanese in the Phillipines, Roose ordered him to retreat so he did, promising the men that remained behind that he would return
What was Doolittle's raid? Colonel James Doolittle led a Pearl Harbor type air raid over Tokyo and lifted American spirits
Who was Chester Nimitz? The commander of American Naval Forces in the Pacific, he defended Midway, destroying Japanese planes and aircraft carriers, avenging Pearl Harbor
What was the turning point of the war in the Pacific? The Battle of Midway, after we won we began island hopping, taking back the Pacific islands one by one
What was the first land battle that the Japanese lost? Guadalacanal, it was just the beggining, after this, MacArthur went back to the Phillipines.
After we freed the Fillipinos we took this island, which was important as a base for heavily loaded bombers Iwo Jima
How was the Battle for Okinawa eye-opening? The Allies had a chance of defeating Japan but it was going to be a very rough war since the Japanese prefered suicide over surrender
Who developed the atomic bomb which was a well kept secret even to the president? J. Robert Oppenheimer and Leslie Groves
Where did Truman order the two atomic bombs to be dropped? What was their effect? Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito decided he didnt want to see his people suffer anymore so he ended the war
What did Stalin want from Germany? He wanted to divide it into sections controlled by the Allies, Roose compromised but kept Stalin's ideas close so Stalin would support him in developing the United Nations
What were the effects of the Nazi hate? Germany was divided into 4 sections, US, France, Britain, Soviet Union. Many nazis were sentenced to death or put in prison
What did we do when we occupied Japan? We helped them out, we formed them a constitution, introduced a free market economy and gave people the power to elect their emperor
