The War for Europe and North Africa

What began the tight friendship between Britain and the US? Roose invited Churchill over to have a conference on what to do after the bombing of Pearl Harbor
What did Churchill and Roose decide would be their first move? Attack Hitler in Europe, worry about Japan later
The German's U-boat wolf packs were frequently sinking American ships that needed to get supplies to Britain, how did the US respond? Our ships traveled in convoys, with ships using radar to find uboats underwater, and airplanes with radar searching the surface, uboat numbers fell. We also sped up ship production.
What was the first great Allie turning point of the war? Stalingrad, the Germans thought they had it in the bag (over a million Russians were killed) but when winter came they froze to death without any supplies or backup and the Russians succeeded with a counter attack
Who were the major military leaders in the North African War? Dwight D. Eisenhower led the Allies, and Erwin Rommel commanding the Africa Korps
Why did the Allies attack Northern Africa instead of Western Europe? They didnt think they would have enough troops to fight the Germans who would come from the Eastern front, so they took over Germany's African colonies.
What was the next move the Allies made that coincided with their feelings of unreadiness They attacked Italy instead of France and Germany.
What great event was caused by the Italy campaign? Once the army in Sicily fell (very easily) people got angry at Mussolini and made him resign. The king came back to power and Italians celebrated the end of the war... a little too soon
What was "Bloody Azio"? The battle of Allies vs. Germany, it occured near Rome because Hitler wanted to attack the Allies no matter where they were
Who were some of the most decorated units in the war? Minorites. The Tuskegee Airman (Black). The Buffaloes (Black). Company E (Mexicans). The 100th Batallion (Japanese Hawaiians)
What was the Allie initiative to retake Western Europe from the nazis called? Who led it? Operation Overlord, it was led by Dwight D. Eisenhower. It began by tricking Hitler into thinking we were going to attack from Calais, France, when really we entered through Normandy. Germans hit us hard, on the day called D-day.
Who was Omar Bradley? A general who led land and air forces, creating a gap in the German line where General George Patton and his Third Army advanced and freed Paris.
What was the Battle of the Bulge? Hitler sent tanks toward the Allies, creating a bulge, although no one succeeded in pushing back the other, but we badly damaged the nazis so they could do nothing but retreat
What happened after we weakened the nazis and pushed through? The Allies and Soviets freed the "Death Camps" claiming they werent concetration camps they were mass murder plants
What was V-E Day? Victory in Europe day, The nazis surrendered unconditionally and Hitler shot himself
Who replaced Roose after he died, a month before V-E Day? Harry S. Truman
