The south was in ruins after the Civil War. Reconstruction was the rebuilding.

QuestionAnswer
What was Reconstruction? A period of time just after the Civil War. It was Abraham Lincoln's plan to rebuild the South and heal the Union. But he was shot at a play (theater) by a southerner John Wilk's Booth.
What were some of the problems in the South? Freed slaves called FREEDMEN lacked jobs, income and places to stay. Some ran for US Congress and won. Many left go north or west. South was in ruins. Northerners wanted to punish the south and make it hard for them to come back into the Union.
Andrew Johnson became president after Lincoln's death. He made it easy for south to come back into the Union. What were some thimgs the south did? South passed BLACK CODES= laws which restricted blacks rights. Also groups formed like the KKK=Ku Klux Klan to try to intimidate blacks into slave like control.
How did the US Congress react to the south's black code laws? They put the south under Military control until the southern state would submit and did treat blacks equally and re-admitted a a state. It didn't work really well. South hated the north even more.
The Federal Government (US CONGRESS) passed the CIVIL WAR AMENDMENTS. What are they? These are the civil rights amendments for blacks. Southern states had to agree to these to be re-admitted as a state. Congress passed 13th, 14th and 15th Amendment.
What are in the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments? 13th=abolished slavery. 14th=if born in USA, then you're a citizen and have equal rights, due process of law and equal protection under state/federal law. 15th= grants black male the right to vote.
How did Reconstruction end? When a southern state entered he Union, and agreed to the CIVIL WAR AMENDMENTS, the federal troops left the state. Southern state government began to pass Black code or JIM CROW laws.
