Looking at the issue of slavery and compromises

QuestionAnswer
To prevent war and keep the Union together, US Congress made a series of compromises to keep the southern states happy. WHAT WAS THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE of 1820? Congress drew imaginary line across the middle of the USA running from east to west. This line separated the states. Any state entering the Union south of the line would be a slave state. Any state north of the line would be a free state.
What was the Compromise of 1850 Series of 4 bills/laws that tried to stop sectional(split in country). Its goal was to deal with the spread of slavery to territories in order to keep northern and southern interests in balance.
What was the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854? US Congress allowed the settlers in these two territories to vote/ decide if territory would become a slave or free state.
What was Bleeding Kansas? Both abolitionists(John Brown)and slave owners flooded into Kansas to vote for their side because of the Kansas Nebraska Act. Violence and blood shed broke out over the state as both sides killed each other over issue of slavery.
What happened at John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry? John Brown-abolitionist- goal was to start a slave uprising in Virginia using captured weapons. After capturing several buildings, Brown/his men were surrounded/killed by southern troops. Brown was hanged for treason. North anti-slavery support increased
Who was DRED SCOTT and why was the Dred Scott case so important? Dred Scott- a slave-lost his case that he should be free because he lived in free state. Court ruled that even though he had been taken by his owner to a free state, he was still a slave because slaves were property. Abolitionist fought back violently.
What are the 4 bills or laws in the 1850 Compromise?? 1 California entered as free state 2=Slave & Utah were allowed to use popular sovereignty voted as to whether the states would be free or slave) 4= created the Fugitive Slave Law(had to return slaves to their owners no matter where slave was)
