Human Development Index the UN's index used to rank the standard of living of a country
Standard of Living a measure on how well people live in different countries: life expectancy, literacy rate, and GDP per capita
GDP (gross domestic product) per capita the total value of all goods and services produced in a country in one year divided by the population
NGO (non-governmental organization) local, national and international groups that work independently of government issues
NIC (newly industrialized countries) not developing and not developed
HIPCs (heavily indebted poor countries) countries in debt to developed nations
Millennium Development Goals eight goals developed by the member states of the United States to close the gap in living standards between developed and developing countries
Malnutrition lack of nourishment
Globalization the spread of ideas, information, and culture around the world
Multinational Corporations companies that do business in more than one country
Megaproject a very costly project to help develop infrastructure
Commodities goods or services that are bought or sold
Structural Adjustment Programs a program designed to adjust the economies of developing countries as a condition of receiving loans
