The Debate over the ratification of the US Constitution.

QuestionAnswer
A convention was held to ratify (pass) the new US Gov't. One group called the anti-Federalist did not want to pass this. WHO WERE THE ANTI-FEDERALISTS? They were people who thought the US Constitution gave too much power to the new Central Government. They wanted the states to have more power.
Why did the Anti-federalist refuse to vote for the new US Constitution? The new Federal Government did not protect individual rights. They wanted a BILL OF RIGHTS ADDED before they would vote for it.
Who were the Federalists? This group that thought the New US Constitution would protect against rebellion, foreign invasion, protect interstate trade (trade between states). They said people's rights were protected by having 3 branches in the government.
What were the Federalists Papers? Articles written and published which convinced the USA to become Federalists and support the new US Constitution.
How was the US Constitution Ratified? The Federalists agreed to add a Bill of Rights after the US Constitution had been ratified which they did in 1788. 11 states voted for(ratified) the new US Constitution. You only needed 9 out of the 13 states to ratify.
What are the Bill of Rights? They are the first 10 amendments of the US Constitution. The 1st amendment being freedom of religion, press, speech, assembly, petition.
Who was our first President and how was he chosen? George Washington was not chosen by the common vote of the people. It was the US Congress that unanimously (everyone in Congress) voted for him.
