Understand the positve and negative aspects of the Article of Confederation

| What was the Article of Confederation? | It was a try to create a Central (also called Federal or National) Government. The 13 states were like 13 separate countries, So the states didn't want to give up power to this new Federal Government. |
| What were some problems with the this Article of Confederation document? | No President (executive Branch) to carry out laws. No Judicial Branch (national courts) to hear complaints about States abuse. Central government could not demand (levy) taxes so they couldn't pay national debt. All states had to approve laws in Congress |
| What some good parts of the Articles of Confederation? | The creation Of the Northwest Ordinance, The Central government is able to declare war, end war and create treaties. AND THIS GOVERNMENT HELD THE NEW NATION TOGETHER WHILE FIGHTING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. |
| What was the North West Ordinance? | This provided a way to create states and sell land in the North West Territory. States came out of this IMOWI(Indiana,Michigan,Ohio, Wisconsin and Illonis). |
| What where the requirements for the Northwest Ordinance? | 1=Had to have 60,000 people living in territory,2=write state constitution, 3=ban slavery,4= educate children, 5=have trial by jury, 6=freedom of religion, |
| What was Shay's rebellion? | A group of Massachusetts farmers tried to take over the courts who were going to take away their farms because the farmers couldn't pay taxes. They demanded lower taxes and paper money to pay their taxes. State troopers arrested them. |
| What changes did Shay's rebellion cause? | There were many rebellions like Shay's. It showed that the Central Government was powerless to help its citizens. States feared another war, so another constitution convention was called to fix the Article of Confederation. |
