IGC-E1c Color Theory (Unit 3) Color Printing

QuestionAnswer
Substrate The vehicle that carries the image
CMYK The colors of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black that form the subtractive color space
Rosette The visual pattern formed by printing screens of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black at 30 degree angles.
Spot Color Colored ink printed that is NOT Cyan, Magenta, Yellow or Black
Moire A visual pattern formed when the improper use of screen angles are combined
Color Separation Artwork split into component plates of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black in preparation for process printing (CMYK) or into the required number of plates for spot color printing.
Pantone Matching System (PMS) The most commonly used ink mixing and color reference system in offset printing.
Process Color Four inks (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, or CMYK ) printed on paper in layers of dots that combine to create the illusion of many more colors.
Subtractive Color Theory The use of 4 inks (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black) that absorb light wave-lengths that create colors. Used for process printing
Halftone Dot Printing A printing technique that simulates a continuous tone picture through the use of dots, varying either in size, in shape or in spacing
