7=History/Feudalism

Describe the characteristics feudal system and the Renaissance in Europe

QuestionAnswer
What is Feudalism? A system where people gave up their freedom to a king for protection. The King then created levels in society. King gave away land to nobles/knights in exchange for the noble's military service.
What are the levels of society or social system in Feudalism? At the top is the king, who controlled laws. Then came the Nobles/priests, Next came the knights,then peasants and at the bottom were the serfs ( who were like slaves)
What was the economic system under Feudalism? Most people lived on a manor. The manor was the land given to the noble by the king. Each manor was self sufficient (grew own food, made own clothing etc.). The king collected taxes from nobles which wasn't money but goods/products
Who was more powerful than the King in the Middles Ages under Feudalism? The Roman Catholic Church. The POPE( head of the church) made sure all the countries (kings) in Europe obeyed him.
Where else did the Feudal system operate? China= leaders were called Emperors, Japan= leaders were called Shoguns, India= caste system
What ended the Feudal system in Europe? The Crusades. Series of wars over 400 year. Catholic church urged people to go to the middle east ( jerusalem) to fight/ take over the city for Christianity. Caused serfs, peasants = everyone to leave the manor. See the world, come back with new ideas
What was the impact of the Crusades? INCREASED TRADE=Europe wanted new products(spices, sugar, silk) from countries. INTOLERANCE=Jews muslim and christians persecuted (hurt) each other due to wars. GAINED NEW IDEAS=europeans learned new ideas like zero, language and bought new products.
