Unit 1: Identity and Ideology Terms
| Term | Definition |

| beliefs | the things that a person sees as being true; influenced by factors such as culture, language, religion/spirituality, relationship to the land, gender, and media |
| bias | favouring one side over another rather than being neutral; to influence people either negatively or positively towards some idea or event |
| capitalism | an economic system in which private business people make decisions about production, resources are privately owned, and competition determines prices and what is produced. |
| collective | a group of individuals collected into a group that share something in common. |
| collectivism | an ideology based on the importance of the collective or group. The needs of the individual come after the group's needs have been obtained. |
| communism | the political, social, and economic system in which the state, governed by a single party without formal opposition, owns all property, controls the production and distribution of goods and services, and controls the social and cultural life of the people |
| identity | the key characteristics that people use to describe who they are |
| ideology | a theory or concept about the way in which society should be organized; a system of thought that includes beliefs and values that can be seen through actions |
| individual | a single person (or other item) |
| individualism | an ideology with a belief in the primary importance of the individual and in the virtues of self-reliance and personal independence |
| media | methods of communicating usually in the form of newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and the Internet that may be used for communicating various information such as the news, weather, advertising, information, and propaganda. |
| perspective | the point of view that is shaped by one's background and experiences |
| spectrum | a broad range of related objects or values or qualities or ideas or activities |
| values | the things that are seen to be very important; influenced by factors such as culture, language, religion/spirituality, relationship to the land, gender, and media |
| world view | a collection of beliefs about life and the universe held by an individual or group. It is the lens through which the world is viewed by an individual or group. It is the perspective from which the world is interpreted. |
