| Flatboat | used to take trade goods down river to new orleans, after all goods were sold the boat was chopped up and sold for firewood and then the person would have to walk back home. |

| Temperance Movement | getting people to drink less in the 1830's. factory owners had to start getting involved for reform to take off. after 1840 American temperance society tried to abolish drinking. |
| American Colonization Society | idea of freeing slaves and colonizing them by sending them to Africa which would gradually abolish slavery. this does not happen, most do not go to Africa. 1817. |
| American Antislavery Society | Helped to create colonization to end slavery. Started by Garrison had about 2000 members mostly from the Boston area. Liberty part said they would have no new slaves but free soil. |

| The wilmot Proviso | Stated no slavery in new terriotory. passed through senate. 1848 majority of northerners & congrass voted for it but it does not become law. it will eventually become the North position in 1848. |
| California Gold Rush | people moved to california due to gold rush. 60000 people moved there w/ in 3-4 months. they had enogh people to become state. |
| Compromise of 1850 | States: cali admitted as free state 2. slave trade prohibited in Washington DC 3. new and tough fugitive slave law 4. position on slavery up to the territories in the mexican recession. was split up into 4 parts to get it to pass through senate. |
| Fugitive Slave Law | Hires federal officals (marshalls) to walk around and find slaves. magistrate decides if they are run aways and decides their punishment. |
| Stephan Douglas | wants a RR to run from chicago to Califoria, wanted to call unorganized territory Nebraska so they could hae a gov't and a RR. 1854 runs for president and losses. split the compromise. |
| Kansas Nebraska Act | North did not support Douglas. South did as long as thier was 2 changes: 1. have 2 territories kansas and nebraska 2. have territories open to slavery by popular soverignty. passed in 1854. |
| Free Soil, Free Labor | founding of republican party. whigs disappear after kansas nebraska act. Free soil- no new slave states and Free labor- decion to work anywhere an oppertunity to advance. |
| the Proslavery Atchison | good for the slaves, said that slaves were better off then northern factory workers. said slavery was the only way to have peace btwn blacks and whites. this was the southern way of life. |
| Senator David Atchison | responsible for getting kansas to vote to be a slave state, brought thousands of missourians to kansas to stuff the ballot box to make kansas a proslavery state. |
| Bleeding Kansas | becomes the battle ground btwn proslavery and antislavery forces to decide if it was going to be a free or slave state. many people died, happpened in 1846. war between kansas and missouri. |
| Sumner- Brooks Affair | brooks gets mad at sumner for what he says to his uncle so he goes to his office and beats sumner with his cane until it breaks and then walks out. sumner ends up with brain damage and brooks get kicked out of house. becomes very popular in south. |
| Uncle Toms Cabin | 1852 written by harriet beacher Stowe. northerners began to see that slaves were people to and be gan to sympathize for them. it was about a slave family being broken up & the horrible lifestyle set upon them. |
