TermDefinition
Veto The president's formal disapproval of a bill that has been passed by both houses of Congress. Congress can override a veto with a two thirds vote in each house.
Executive Orders Presidential directives that create or modify laws and public policies, without the direct approval of Congress.
Executive Office of the President The president's executive aides and the staffs; the extended White House executive establishment.
Divided Government The situation in which one party controls the White House and the other controls at least one house of Congress.
Electoral Mandate After an election is over, the winning candidate wants to claim that he has been given an electoral mandate, or endorsement, by the voters to carry out the policy platform on which he campaigned.
War Powers Resolution An act of Congress that forces that body decide whether a commitment of troops into a war zone is permissible.
Executive Agreement A pact between the heads of two countries.
Great Society President Lyndon Johnson's broad array of programs designed to redress political, social, and economic inequality.
White House Staff Personnel who run the White House and advise the President. Includes the Chief of Staff and Press Secretary
Inherent Powers Authority claimed by the president that is not clearly specified in the Constitution. Typically, these powers are inferred from the Constitution.
Delegation of Powers The process by which Congress gives the executive branch the additional authority needed to address new problems.
Cabinet A group of presidential advisers; the heads of the executive departments and other key officials.
Gridlock A situation in which government is incapable of acting on important issues.
Legislative Liaison Staff Those people who act as the communication link between the White House and Congress, advising the president or cabinet secretaries on the status of pending legislation.
Treaty A legal agreement between two or more countries.
"Fundraiser In Chief" The president himself has become the "fundraiser in chief" for his party.
Power to Persuade The president's power to persuade seems more potent within his own party.
Lyndon Johnson Lyndon Johnson has a strong liberal ideology concerning domestic affairs. He believed that government has a responsibility to help disadvantaged Americans.
Ronald Reagan Reagan turned Johnson's philosophy on its head, declaring that government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem.
