| Term | Definition |

| Articles of Confederation | this was the basis for setting up their own government |
| Checks and balances | each branch of government keeps watch over the other two branches |
| U.S. Constitution | a document that explains how the government should be set up |
| Executive branch | carries out the laws |
| Legislative branch | makes laws |
| Senate | one part of the Legislative branch; two Senators from each state |
| House of Representatives | one part of the Legislative branch; state population decides how many each state has |
| Congress | the Senate and House of Representatives |
| Judicial branch | deals with laws |
| Jury | a group of citizens that determine whether the accused person is guilty or innocent under the law |
| Veto | to say no to a bill or idea for a law |
| Bill | an idea for a law |
| Bill of Rights | added to the Constitution to make sure all people had guaranteed rights |
| Preamble | introduction that was written at the beginning of the Constitution |
| Responsibility | duty; something you are supposed to do |
| Editorial | opinion article in a newspaper |
| Right | something that everyone deserves |
| Petition | paper signed by voters to make changes |
| Fact | something that can be proven |
| Opinion | a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. |
