Direct Relief | nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with a stated mission to “improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergency situations by mobilizing and providing essential medical resources needed for their care." |
Credit | the ability of a customer to obtain goods or services before payment, based on the trust that payment will be made in the future. |
Hawley Smoot | act sponsored by Senator Reed Smoot and Representative Willis C. Hawley and signed into law on June 17, 1930, that raised U.S. tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods to record levels. |
Shantytown | a deprived area on the outskirts of a town consisting of large numbers of crude dwellings. |
Speculation | investment in stocks, property, or other ventures in the hope of gain but with the risk of loss. |
