vocabulary words

QuestionAnswer
loess The yellow-brown soil that blows into China from the Gobi Desert region.
dike A protective wall that controls or hold back water.
extended family Closely related people of several generations, such as brothers and sisters, parents, uncles and aunts, grandparents, and great-grandparents.
Huang He (Yellow River) The second largest river in China located in the north known for its distinctive yellow color caused by loess.
Chang Jiang River The longest river in China and Asia and the second longest river in the world at 3,000 miles long.
North China Plain A large plain in East Asia, built up by soil deposits of the Huang He.
philosophy A system of beliefs and values.
civil service The group of people whose job is to carry out the work of the government.
Confucius Chinese philosopher and teacher whose beliefs, known as Confucianism, greatly influenced Chinese life.
currency The kind of money used by a group or a nation.
warlord A leader of an armed group. (Like a general.)
Shi Huangdi Emperor of the Qin dynasty who was the first to unify the Chinese empire.
Lui Bang The founder of the Ha dynasty of China in 202 B.C. He was born a peasant who went on to stabilize the government and promote education.
Wudi Chinese emperor from 140-86 B.C. he brought the Han dynasty to its peak, expanded the Chinese empire, and made Confucianism the state religion.
silk A valuable cloth originally only made in China from threads spun by caterpillars called silkworms.
Sima Qian Chinese scholar, astronomer, and historian who wrote the most important history of ancient China.
Silk Road An ancient trade route between China and Europe used to transport goods.
