Harship and Suffering During the Depression

What are shantytowns? Little neighborhoods of houses made out of scraps that people who had been evicted from their city homes lived in
What did people turn to in order to obtain food? bread lines and soup kitchens run by charity organizations
Why were blacks and latinos lynched or deported? They were competing for the same jobs as white men
What was the Dust Bowl? A place in the Great Plains that went through a drought, and since there were no tress dust kicked up and dust storms presisted for years, killing many people
Where did the term hobo come from? Men would lose their jobs and become so discouraged about not being able to support their families that they would leave them and live on trains and wander around.
What is direct relief? Cash payments or food provided by the government, only charity organizations provided relief for poor families
Who were Hoover tourists? Young boys and girls (11-17) who would hop and trains and travel the country looking for work and a purpose
What rose during the Great Depression? suicide rates rose by 30%
What was one happy thing about the Great Depression? Everyone was willing to help everyone else
