Regime the entire system of rules, laws, institutions in a state
Government people and agencies that have power and authority to determine policies and allocation of resources in a given territory
States any legal entity with a monopoly on the legitimate use of force within a given territory or defined boundaries
Nations community of people that share some common identity from culture, language, religion, race, history, or descent
Institutions formal and informal rules and norms that organize social, political, and economic relations
Organizations group of individuals that help navigate institutions designed for a purpose
Validity the extent to which our measures correspond to the concepts they're trying to measure
Reliability extent to which our measures give is the same answers repeatedly
Replicability extent to which a 3rd party can reproduce your measure
Nominal classify observations into groups and categories ex. type of dictatorships
Ordinal rank-order observations, but can't make any substantial differences between categories ex. Polity IV, Freedom House
Interval can say how much more one category is from another ex. pH
