TermDefinition
Arab A member of the Semitic people of the Arabian Peninsula
Ethnic Groups People with a common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background
Fundamentalism A movement or attitude (often religious) stressing strict and literal following of a set of basic principles
Islam The religious faith of Muslims including belief in Allah as the only god and Muhammad as hid prophet
Israeli A native or inhabitant of the Republic of Israel
Judaism A religious developed among the ancient Hebrews and characterized by belief in one god who has revealed himself as Abraham, Moses, and the Hebrew prophets
Kurd A member of a group of mountain people who live in Armenia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey
Mandate A country placed under the control of another power by international agreement
Muslim A follower of Islam. Literally translate as "one who surrenders (to god)"
Ottoman Empire A Turkish empire that ruled over much of the middle east as well as parts of Europe and Africa from the 13th century to the end of World War 1 in 1918
Palestine A Southwest Asian region often called the Holy Land
Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) The PLO's goal is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in Palestine
Persian People originally from Central Asia who have lived on the Iranian plateau for 3,000 years
Sunni The majority branch of Islam (85%). After the death of Muhammad they elected a new leader from among those capable of the job
Shi'ite The minority branch of Islam (15%). They believed that after the death of Muhammad the new leader should have been a member of Muhammad's family.
