How did the South and the North differ about the Constitution? Leaders in the South considered the states to have higher authority in matters of government. The North believed that the Constitution gave the Federal (national) Government final authority over the states.
Why did many people in the South fear the Republican Party? Thy feared Abraham Lincoln would try to end slavery.
Why was the Constitutional Union party formed? Some people, seeing that none of the candidates had support in all parts of the country, they organized the new party.
How did the people of TN feel about secession before April 1861? In general they were sorry to see the Union break apart, so in February 1861 they voted against the referendum to consider the question of secession.
What event changed the feelings of Tennesseans after April 1861? Confederate forces in Charleston, South Carolina, forced the surrender of Federal Fort Sumter, and President Lincoln began raising an army.In February 1861 Middle TN was 51% against secession, in April 1861 they were 88% for it.
