| plantations | a large farm or estate on which crops are raised, often by resident workers |
| merchant | one who runs a retail business; a shopkeeper |
| landowner | one who owns land |
| terrain | the surface features of an area of land |
| town meeting | a meeting which New England landowners could take part in government |
| artisan | a skilled manual worker; a craftsperson |
| assembly | a group of persons gathered together for a common reason, as for a legislative, religious, educational, or social purpose |
| cede | to surrender possession of, especially by treaty |
